Newsletter – September 2018

Happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all Odias in Australia.

It has been a while since the last newsletter was sent out and I am excited that we have revived it now.

In this issue, I would like to highlight the focus areas (outlined in the attached newsletter) The Executive Committee (EC) has been working on to
further strengthen our community.

The Committee works together and relies heavily on the members of the community to achieve the community goals.

It is heart-warming to see many dedicated members contributing in making our events and projects successful.

I will be counting on your active participation in many other initiatives that are being rolled out at both state and
national level.

Ganesh Puja 2017

ganesha-kubera-story

Puja Fact 2017:
A record number of 900 puja mandaps came up in Cuttack this year out of which 600 mandaps to take part in the immersion ceremony, as people here have started following the trend of Mumbai.

In order to get rid of the traffic problem in the city, the immersion ceremonies this year will be held on three Sundays i.e. 3rd, 10th and 17th of September as the Ganesh Chaturthi in commencing on 25th August.

Binapani club of Chauliagunj had erected a 35 feet high idol of Lord Ganesha which was a replica of Mumbai’s Lalbagh ka Raja and had drawn a lot of attraction, around 3 years ago. This has stirred a competition among other mandaps to erect an attractive idol.

In the coming week like every year Odias around Australia will be offering their prayers to Lord Ganesha. If you want to join the community in celebrating Ganesha Chaturthi please find the details below:

Media Release – National convention of Odia community in Australia to showcase Odia art, culture

Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Bhubaneswar: The Odias community of Australia will be meeting again after 2 years keeping the tradition strong for the new generations to continue. OriozInc, the Association of Odias in Australia, began this tradition of organising national gathering every second year with the aim of fostering and strengthening the bondbetweenOdias who call Australia home, temporarily or permanently.

These biennial national gatherings are called Sammilanis, with a name given to each one with the theme.  The name of the 8th Sammilani which will be held on 25-27 March 2016 is Aarohana, symbolising the upward journey of the community since 2005 when it formalised itself with registration of Orioz Inc.

Mr Sujeet Jena, President of Orioz says that, the Odia community of Australia are very proud of themselves for investing in building a single Odia community in a large country such as Australia.  Like the last Sammilani in 2014, this time also members from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory – Canberra, New South Wales and Queensland will come together for 2 days, showcasing Odia art, culture and traditions.

Hundreds of members of the community will meet at the Maroochy Waterfront Camp and Conference Centre in the Sunshine Coast region.  The 2 days of the gathering is packed with both group and individual activities such as a river cruise, group dances, sole performances and health talks. A special cook has been engaged to recreate all the Odia dishes that would bring back the memories from back home.

Dr Manoj Nayak, the Executive Advisor of Orioz says this Sammilani will live upto the name of AAROHANA and will focus on the young generation who are brave enough to grow up with multicultural values but are  still choosing to keep their unique Odia identity.

Aarohan – Sammilani 2016

Our national gathering every biennial!!

Every biennial, the Odia community of Australia meet to recreate the biggest Odia “khatti” in the southern hemisphere .  This has been a tradition since 2003.  We call it Sammilani.  And the name of the 2016 Sammilani is AAROHANA.  The Odia community of Qld has a chance to host this national event after 10 years!!

Under the auspices of Orioz Inc, the Association of Odias in Australia, these national gatherings provide the much needed opportunity for the members of the Odia community across Australia to come together and re-energise their bonding over sharing in-house talents in Odia art and culture.

AAROHANA is scheduled to be held on 25-27 March 2016 at the Maroochy Waterfront Camp and Conference Centre, Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
